Spread betting

What is spread betting?

If you are resident in the UK or Ireland you can spread bet in addition to trading CFDs. Visit our .co.uk website to find out more. Spread betting is a tax-efficient† way of speculating on the price movement of thousands of global financial products, including forex, indices, commodities, shares and treasuries.

Spread betting is a form of derivatives trading, where instead of buying or selling the underlying asset (such as a physical share or commodity) you place a bet for an amount per point movement based on whether you expect the price of a product to go up or down in value. For instance, if you expect the value of a share to rise in the coming days, you would open a long position (buy) for an amount per point, let’s say £5, which is known as your ’stake’. Conversely, if you expect the share to fall in value in you would take a short position (sell). You will make a profit or loss in multiples of your stake based on whether or not the market moves in your direction. Any loss incurred will be for the full value of the position and therefore can exceed margin deposited.

†Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and can change or may differ in a jurisdiction other than the UK.
